REMEMBERING KATHY STALLINGS
Thank you to all the Briar Village neighbors and friends who donated books for Kathy’s neighborhood celebration of life. We decided to donate the books to the Houston Final Four Local Organizing Committee so they could pass out books to elementary school libraries they are visiting for their “Read to the Final Four” community initiative. This initiative is part of a series of community activities taking place in the run-up to Houston’s hosting of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four in April 2023. I teach a practicum class made up of Rice freshmen and sophomores who are taking part in a two semester series of lectures and unique insider opportunities revolving around the Final Four. We took a picture in front of the program landing page on the Final Four Houston website with students holding some of the books on the day we donated the books. Kathy and I raised some book nerds who were regulars at the city libraries near us, and who participated in Name that Book competitions and earned tons of AR points as elementary school students. Providing books to elementary school students in our community was a nice way to honor that part of Kathy’s passion for passing along her love of reading to our kids and extending it to kids in Houston area schools.
